Introduction to course
The basic Diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery is geared to the health needs of the individuals, families, community, and the country at large.
The aims of the Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery program are :
- To prepare nurses with a sound educational program in nursing to enable them to function as efficient members of the health team, beginning with the competencies for first-level positions in all kinds of health care settings.
- To help nurses develop an ability to cooperate and coordinate with members of the health team in the prevention of disease, promotion of health, and rehabilitation of the sick.
- To help nurses in their personal and professional development, so that they are able to make the maximum contribution to society as useful and productive individuals, citizens as well as efficient nurses.
- To serve as a base for further professional education and specialization in nursing.
- To prepare nurses to keep pace with the latest professional and technological developments and use these for providing nursing care services.
Program objective
The nurse on completion of this course will be able to:
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to individuals, families, and communities in health and illness by applying the nursing process.
- Assess the health needs of clients from birth to death and plan, implement, and evaluate appropriate nursing interventions.
- Deliver effective nursing care to promote, maintain, and restore health and prevent illness.
- Promote self-care and healthy lifestyles among individuals and families.
- Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in nursing practice.
- Utilize knowledge from biological, behavioral, and social sciences in nursing practice.
- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with members of the health care team and the community.
- Participate actively in curative, preventive, promotive, and rehabilitative health care services.
- Mobilize community resources and encourage community participation in health programs.
- Practice nursing with ethical and professional values in personal and professional life.
- Demonstrate leadership and administrative skills while working with health team members.
- Educate patients, families, and communities using appropriate teaching methods.
- Assist in basic nursing research activities and apply findings to improve nursing care.
- Recognize the importance of continuing education and professional development.
